WOMEN, GIRLS, AND SCIENCE AT IES ZAIDÍN VERGELES

In celebration of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, an event was held at IES Zaidín-Vergeles. Female students from 2nd and 3rd year of ESO had the opportunity to participate in a discussion with Mayra C. Osorio, Sara E. Ramos, Mª Ángeles Yélamos, and Alba García, where they shared their projects and experiences in the world of science.

The Spfe group is committed to gender strategies, promoting the access of women of all ages to scientific knowledge, and promoting and encouraging the access of women to STEM studies.

In this sense, one of its members has been part of the “Comisión de la Mujer y Astronomía” of the Spanish Society of Astronomy (SEA), and has actively participated in several activities organized by this commission with gender equality as a central theme, such as talks (especially on the International Day of Women and Girls in Science), interviews, exhibitions, web pages, dedicated meetings, or on-line activities (e.g., “chat with an astronomer”).

A change for the better is possibly not so much about making more statistics (well-known) of the number of women versus men, but that the actions themselves make these statistics unnecessary.
